Register with InformeDesignSM and Infuse Your Designs with Research

Have you visited --- or better yet, registered --- with InformeDesignSM? InformeDesign, the first centralized clearinghouse of design and human behavior research on the Web, is a great resource for design practitioners, educators, students and Industry Partners. Best of all, services on the site are free.  Visit www.informedesign.umn.edu.

There are a lot of important and applicable research findings out there but most are written by researchers in a scholarly format steeped in statistical analysis and are hard to read. Moreover, the researcher often does not take the findings the last step and indicate how they can be applied to the design of the built environment. That’s where InformeDesign comes in. InformeDesign currently contains more than 400 "practitioner-friendly" research summaries of research-based design criteria transformed from a variety of current scholarly journal articles related to design and human behavior. Using these research summaries will enable you to incorporate research into the design process, allowing you to create evidence-based design solutions. Infusing research in your designs will help take your practice to the next level. Educators and students can use the summaries to enrich their classroom experiences, highlighting the benefits of applying research to their designs or as a tool for beginning a literature review. Industry Partners can use the site to gain new knowledge to enhance their interactions with designers and other clients.

More than 80 journals are the sources of literature for the new research summaries added each week, with an expected 500 summaries to be added to the Web site each year. A few of the journals being accessed at this time are the Journal of Interior Design, Human Factors, the Journal of Consumer Studies, the Journal of Gerontology and the International Journal of Hospitality Management ---and the list grows continuously! Visitors can access the research summaries by performing simple keyword searches (using a word or phrase of your choice) or by reviewing the research summaries listed under three major categories: "Space," "Issues" and "Occupants." The site also offers online discussion forums, listings of practitioner-researcher collaborative research opportunities, a calendar of research-related events, a tutorial on how to successfully navigate the site and a glossary of terms.

Registering for the site is quick and easy. Just follow the link at the bottom of the InformeDesign home page. Once you register, you will receive e-mails announcing new research summaries related to your areas of interest and notice of the monthly newsletter, Implications, among other benefits. And you can change your areas of interest at any time and as often as you want---perhaps to reflect a new project type or specialization you’re undertaking.
